Fix. Radon Mitigation Benefits.

There are many possible benefits to installing and continuously operating a radon mitigation system.  Although there are up-front and operational costs, the long-term benefits are far greater.

Reduced lung cancer risk.

The primary benefit of radon mitigation is a reduced radon exposure, and thus reduced risk of lung cancer.  With lower indoor radon levels, there are fewer radon particles in the air. Inhaling fewer radon particles means fewer radon decay products will stick to lung tissue.

Greater certainty.

Radon mitigation fans run continuously, so a constant vacuum is placed on the radon-laden soil gases underneath the home's foundation.  The system vacuum is more consistent than the vacuum that the home naturally places on the soil.  While some radon will still be present in the home, the consistency of the mitigation system vacuum reduces the variability of indoor radon levels.

As an example example, below are the high and low radon measurements in a home that we tested before and after installing a mitigation system.

     Pre-Mitigation      Post-Mitigation
 Low Level    5.6 pCi/L  0.0 pCi/L
High Level  23.4 pCi/L  1.8 pCi/L

With a properly-functioning mitigation system, your radon levels will consistently be low.

Increased air exchange.

A heat recovery ventilator simultaneously supplies and exhausts air from the building, while retaining some of the heat from the exhausted air.  HRV exhausts air from the home and replaces it with fresh, outdoor air, mechanically increasing the air exchange rate.  Not only does this technique decrease radon levels, the fresh air exchange can help reduce other indoor air pollutants.

Reduced moisture.

Active soil depressurization is the most common technique used for radon mitigation.  This technique draws soil gases out from underneath the home before they have a chance to enter the living space.  In addition to radon, the mitigation system fan may draw water vapor out from below the foundation that might otherwise enter through the slab.  Reduced moisture levels can reduce the growth of mold and other allergens.
